Buffalo posts the nation's fourth-worst poverty rate for children

The renaissance that has enlivened downtown Buffalo and the Elmwood and Hertel corridors has not reached the city's poorer neighborhoods. New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show that almost half of Buffalo's children live in poverty. The resulting youth poverty rate of 47.2 percent is the fourth-worst among all of the nation's major cities. The five-year version of the bureau's 2017 American Community Survey says that 58,617 residents of Buffalo are younger than 18, and 27,678 of those children are living below the federal poverty line.
